Peace is Like a Little Bird by Siân Collins
Peace is like a little bird I hold in my hands;
fluttering, gentle, fragile.
Yet, beneath those soft feathers
beats a strong heart.
A heart strong enough to power its yearly flight;
A heart that will lead it to its mate and create
This tiny, beating, quivering thing feels
soft and vulnerable in my grasp.
The feathers tickle, but I know that
within this delicate, diminutive form
Is great strength.
Peace is like a patchwork quilt;
put together piece by piece.
Beautiful, yet practical.
Growing slowly, silently until,
one day it flourishes into being.
Each piece unique, but in taking its place
adds to the greater design.
As I wrap the quilt around me,
Grateful for its warmth
I think of the many hands and all the time
It took to make it.
Peace is like a homecoming
after a long, tiring journey.
A place of warmth and safety;
A place of welcome and acceptance.
A place of love.
The Pearl of Great Price
Is this a pearl of wisdom?
perhaps it is a small, simple thing
that catches the light
and reflects it back,
illuminating, for me, something as yet unseen.
Or is this pearl a round, white stone?
ground by sand; made from the
irritation of some poor creature
which has long since died?
a thing of beauty testifying to
a small, hard life.
Or is this pearl something else
an abstract thought that shines and glistens
in someone’s mind
that stays there until the time is right
for it to
come into being and take it’s place.
